American slang term, possibly originating with truckers. A highway hero is someone who maintains an average speed in excess of the posted limit down a long stretch of highway. Truckers and other savvy speeders will notice this person and match his speed, keeping him just barely in sight.

The highway hero serves as a sort of scout, tripping speed traps and instant-on radar before the follower. This gives the follower ample time to slow down before getting a speeding ticket.

Next time you're driving a long distance and feel like getting there a little faster, I recommend you find a highway hero. He'll make your trip shorter and help keep you safe from evil traffic cops and state patrol posses.
