heterological

A linguistic adjective that implies that a word is NOT self-descriptive. An example of a heterological word is monosyllabic, since the word monosyllabic contains more than one syllable.

Heterological is the opposite of autological. If you want to make your brain hurt, ask yourself if the word 'heterological' is heterological.

Deciding whether or not heterological is heterological presents a paradox. If "heterological" is heterological, then this very statement asserts that "heterological" applies to itself. And if it does apply to itself, then it must be autological, by definition. But, if "heterological" is autological, then this statement asserts that "heterological," being autological and not heterological, does not apply to itself.
