Hardscape is a landscaping term for anything in that isn't plant-life or soil. In a garden, this entails things like woodwork, stones, garden gnomes and paving; on the grander scale, think streets and sidewalks.
If landscaping from scratch, it is usually advisable to start with hardscaping before adding plants to the equation.
