A grazing fuse is an electronic mechanism that is employed by missiles that intelligently track their target. The fuse will detonate the warhead when it detects that it is close enough to the target to damage or destroy it, but not likely to achieve a direct hit. Rather than over fly the target, or strike at an oblique angle and risk having the contact fuse fail, the grazing fuse gives the missile the chance to still cause some damage.
