Gary finds himself with the unique ability to travel back in time to the east end of London during the Blitz. Despite being happily married back in the 1990s, he falls in love with the barmaid at a 40s pub, the Royal Oak.
This basic premise was expanded upon and extended over time, with an eventual 6 series being produced.
