Basically, a
field expedient is the use of available material to come up with something that
one needs but does not have.
To improvise and come up with a solution.
A popular example would be that on the movie Apollo 13 where the ground crew gathered everything the space crew had in their ship and built that device they needed to survive the malfunction.
