In temperate, thermally stratified lakes, the epilimnion is the uppermost layer of water (above the metalimnion and hypolimnion), which is heated by the solar energy of the sun to high temperatures. It is often 24 degrees celsius or higher in southern Canada, and can reach temperatures of 35 degrees in the southern United States.
