Something that falls in the gray area between food and drug, usually intended as an addition to your diet (such as a vitamin, mineral, amino acid, herb, botanical) as opposed to a whole food or sole item for a meal. Available as a pill, capsule, or liquid at a grocery store, health food store, or drugstore. Since 1994, subject to labelling requirements by the FDA regarding health claims. Claims may not be made about the use of a dietary supplement to diagnose, prevent, mitigate, treat, or cure a specific disease. If it does those things, it's a drug.
