It can be a strange experience to be in a foreign country eating food not native to that country.
When my wife and I were in Japan, we ate Indian food in Kyoto and Tokyo. Now we are not particularly familiar with Indian food, we speak no Indian language, my wife speaks no Japanese, and I do not speak Japanese all that well.
Dining in a restaurant with Indian chefs (that do not primarily speak Japanese) and a Japanese clientele and waitstaff gives a sense of being twice-removed from one's own culture. It's kind of disconcerting and funny at the same time. A very 21st-century, global experience.
