Chakalaka is a hot, curried tomato based sauce that can be put on pretty much anything. It goes really well with pap and most meat products. It can even turn a plate of plain cooked chicken and rice into a tasty meal.

Making chakalaka is really easy. You can do it the proper way and start with all fresh ingredients, or start with tinned tomatoes. I like the cheating method, as I am a lazy student.

Put a small pot on the stove and dump two 340g cans of tinned chopped tomatoes into it. Add a finely chopped onion. Mix in two teaspoons of hot curry powder, two chopped chillies, a tablespoon of olive oil and salt to taste. Heat it for about five minutes until the onion is soft. Enjoy.

Chakalaka should keep well in the fridge in a sealed container. Feel free to adjust the ingredients to taste. Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and garlic are some of the things I have seen people add to their chakalaka.
