A cause group is a classification of a pressure group. It is also sometimes known as a promotional group.

This sort of pressure group fights the government on a certain issue. This issue may not affect the members of the group but they feel strongly enough on the subject to join the pressure group. It also probably doesn't benefit them in anyway. An example of this type of pressure group is Shelter.

They gain their members from every walk of life since they don't have a restricted membership.

Cause groups can then be split into smaller groups:

  • Attitude Cause group: One of their main aims is to change peoples' attitude on an issue such as Greenpeace and enviromental issues.
  • Political Cause group: They are out to change a political issue such as Liberty fighting for Human Rights in England and Wales.
