An enzyme found in the human body that catalyzes the equilibrium reaction between carbon dioxide and carbonic acid. It is largely through the actions of this enzyme that the component of CO2 conveyed through the blood as bicarbonate ions, which are the product of hydrolyzed carbonic acid, is released for diffusion across the membranes of the alveoli in the lungs. This allows for the efficient removal of CO2 from the body.
