ka'nap"pa. n.

A small appetizer that consists of a spread (like paté, caviar or cheese) on a cracker or thinly sliced toast. This is finger food -- you're supposed to eat it in one bite. Please don't try to bite it in half or nibble daintily around the edge like a field mouse because it doesn't work. What inevitably happens is that you'll spill food all over your clothes and make a spectacle out of yourself. If at all possible, you should enjoy your food. I'm sure Miss Manners would agree.

Ca`na`pe" (?), n. [F., orig. a couch with mosquito curtains. See Canopy.]

1.

A sofa or divan.

2.

(Cookery)

A slice or piece of bread fried in butter or oil, on which anchovies, mushrooms, etc., are served.
