A type of photographer's error that shows up as a blurred image on a negative when really the subject was still and in focus. The problem usually comes down to using too slow a shutter speed when shooting hand-held (without the aid of a tripod).

The minimum shutter speed for shooting hand-held is dependent on a number of factors:

• Type of camera: certain types of cameras produce vibration based upon their exposure method. Single Lens Reflex cameras are the primary culprit in this case - the internal mirror has the possibility of shaking the camera when moving out of the way. Some Focal Plane Shutters also produce a lot of vibration.
• The weight of the camera: the heavier it is, the more strain on your hand it produces... It's much harder to hold a 5 pound object absolutely still than a 5 ounce one.
• The ergonomics of the camera: again, purely for the purpose of making your hands and arms more comfortable.
• How like a surgeon you are.
• Will. I've taken absolutely crystal clear photos with a heavy Medium Format Single Lens Reflex in the bitter cold at 1/2 of a second simply because I had no other choice...

Ultimately, if you want to be fairly certain you can eliminate camera movement 95% of the time you should use a shutter speed of 1/30th or faster. 1/60th will guarantee it unless you're jumping about like a madman.
