Butterflies in the stomach is where someone usually gets nervous. They don't feel well, and it is a little like being hungry or having indigestion. It originally originated in England as an idiom or a simile to represent the feeling that it gives. The feeling of having something fluttering inside the stomach, and gently churning one's feelings.

There is a medical explanation for butterflies in the stomach. When nervous or afraid, the body produces chemicals, one of which is adrenaline. The presence of this causes your solar plexus to tighten, (that's in your abdomen) and causes nausea, stomach pain etc. In severe cases vomiting is also a symptom.
