An
Australian term meaning to go for a walk in the wilderness, but a particular type of wilderness with lots of tall trees. Similar to
hiking, except that
Australia has no real mountains. The
bush to
Australians isn't just a
tree with no
trunk, but rather a general term meaning an area of wilderness, typically mostly full of trees. To venture into the wilderness is sometimes simply stated as to "go bush". Most bushwalking is done along
trails, sometimes known as bushwalks. If you're off the trail and just wading through trees with no trail (in which case expect lots of scratches, bruises and
ticks), is called bushbashing.
The term can refer to day-length walks or long camping trips. It's a common recreational activity, though at times physically demanding.
And yes, you can see kangaroos, wallabies, kookaburras, goannas and even koalas on a bushwalk.
