These are signs of vitamin A deficiency. They are described as small, circumscribed, usually triangular or oval in shape, glistening white plaques formed of desquamated thickened conjunctival epithelium on the bulbar conjunctiva (next to the cornea).

Associated findings might be night blindness, xerophthalmia and/or xerosis conjunctivae - all because of the lack of vitamin A.
