Bejel is a form of endemic syphilis which is transmitted by a non-venereal route. That is to say, bejel is strictly not an STD although it is caused by the same micro-organism as syphilis, Treponema pallidum.

Prevalent in rural areas in the Middle East and many Third World countries.

Like venereal syphilis, bejel has a chronic relapsing course and prominent cutaneous manifestations.
