The class of natural fibers which are obtained from the stems of plants. The bast fibers normally used in the textile industry include:

  • Linen: Fiber from the stems of the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum.
  • Hemp: Fiber from the stems of Cannabis sativa
  • Ramie: Fiber from the stems of the China Grass plant (Boehmeria nivea)
  • Jute: Fiber from the jute plant, Corchorus olitrius
