Pronounced benostic, to rhyme with agnostic, banausic is an old-fashioned adjective meaning "relating to earning a living", and is almost always used with negative connotations, much like the more common word mundane. It is often used as a synonym to utilitarian and practical.

It comes from Greek banausikos, meaning 'relating to artisans' (baunos was Ancient Greek for a forge). Despite the similarities, it does not share a root with 'banal', which comes from the French ban, meaning decree.
