A device which is found in medium to large train yards. It is constructed as a hill which a freight train will slowly back up over. Each freight car that reaches the peak of the hill will be broken off from the rest of the train and roll by itself down the other side. On the side where it rolls down, there is an outward branching of tracks which allow the incoming cars to be broken up into new lines of trains based on destination. The more modern humps are also capable of detecting whether a freight car has impaired motion because of a defect.
