They generally aren't made out of asbestos anymore due to heath risks. The asbestos curtain is a heavy fireproof curtain hung just upstage of the proscenium arch to prevent the spread of fire. If a fire occurs on stage the curtain is dropped so that it doesn't spread into the house. (but the actors unfortunately may be burned alive . . .)
