The aperture number is the ratio of an optical system's focal length and of the diameter of its entrance pupil (which often is coincident with the aperture stop of the system). The aperture number expresses the same idea as the numerical aperture. In astronomy, the aperture stop diameter of telescopes is often expressed as f/a.n., for example, f/10.
