anomalous temperature pockets

Anomalous temperature pockets refer to places where a higher or lower ambient temperature is localized, often for a somewhat inexplicable reason. These areas range from places as small as a closet to locations as wide as a valley.
In the personal life experience, I've come across a few of these strange, yet consistent, anomalies in temperature. I tend to run across these during my daily travels; these phenomena happen so frequently in the same general location that I am convinced that they cannot be flukes.

Here are a list of temperature anomalies that I have personally experienced:

• Bancroft Avenue, Berkeley, CA: Between the corner of Bancroft and Telegraph Avenues to about Bowditch Street tend to have a lower temperature than the rest of the street east of Bowditch. Commonly, one will experience a 1-7 degree Fahrenheit increase in the ambient temperature between the Avante Card cardshop and Bowditch Street.
• 405 Freeway, Los Angeles, CA: The Sepulveda Pass, North of Sunset Boulevard and south of Mulholland Drive, contains a consistent temperature gradient. A traveler will experience a drop in temperature of about 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit travelling south through the pass, leaving the San Fernando Valley for toward the Westside.
• My room at home, Los Angeles, CA: My room at home is the hottest room in the place when the temperature is hot, even with all the windows open and the fans going, or the coldest room in the house when the weather is cold. Often, the temperature in the room will be more extreme than the temperature outside, up to a difference of 5-10 degrees Fahrenheit. I have never been able to figure out why this is.

i might be able to shed some light on the mulholland pass anomaly. In Los Angeles, as well as other areas charactarized by cold ocean water (such as san francisco), there is commonly a temperature inversion near coastal areas. Basically the cold air near the ocean slips in under the already present air since it is cold in a relatively thin layer over the water. This results in a lot of cool air sitting over coastal LA with warmer air above it. This is also what brings the low clouds and fog in. The inversion is usually at the top of the fog layer. (its called an inversion cuz temperature usually decreases with height). Anyway, the inversion washes in and if its pretty shallow it cant make it over the hills so it backs up agains the Santa Monica Mountains, where sepulveda pass is. when you drive over the top and down the south side you end up driving into the inversion, and also a lot of smog sometimes - the inversion tends to trap it down there. Its a pretty notable difference, it can be over 90 in the valley and still in the 60s along the beach. I'm not sure if its exactly the same in Berkeley becuase i havent spent much time there.. but id imagine its a similar effect

i've noticed similar effects even more localized out in the high desert near bishop at night. the cold air settles in little creek valleys, and the vegetation there causes evaporation which cools the air even more. So on a hot summer night you'll be driving down the desert with the windows down, drive past a little creek in a little valley, and itll suddenly cool off by like 20 degrees. then it warms up again on the otehr side.. its a pretty neat effect

Occasionally these anomalous temperature pockets occur in bodies of water. (Quite often actually) Sometimes this is the result of currents within the body of water, which usually are a sort of isolated anomaly in and of themselves. Another type of anomaly in water occurs in swimming pools. Typically signified by an isolated warm pocket, these tend to occur near small children, and also the elderly.
