Different animals have different ways of raising their offspring. Some types of male ducks desert the female to mate with others in a single season. Contrastingly, in stickleback fish, the female leaves the male to hatch eggs and take care of young fish until they become more independent. Birds and mammals often look after their young offspring until they can feed themselves or maintain a stable body temperature. In prarie dogs, which often live in communities, newborns are suckled by any lactating female and are groomed by any male.
