Zhongwen is a name for the Chinese language in Chinese. It consists of the words Zhong (meaning central, the adjective used to describe China in Chinese) and wen (meaning language or literature).

Zhongwen has more of a connoctation of written language than of spoken language, however, it is not improper to refer to spoken Chinese as "Zhongwen".

The usual term for the spoken language is Hanyu.
