Yul Gok is the fifth pattern learnt for the ITF style of Tae Kwon Do, and it is therefore, along with all previous patterns, required for the sixth grading, promotion from blue tags (5th kup) to blue belt (6th kup). This grading marks an important transition between junior grade and senior grade.

The definition of the pattern is as follows: "Yul Gok is the pseudonym of a great philosopher and scholar Yi I (1536-1584), nicknamed the Confucius of Korea. The 38 movements refer to his birthplace on the 38th degree latitude, and the diagram represents 'scholar'."

Although this pattern is long (compared to previous patterns), it involves performing groups of a few techniques and then repeating them immediately on the other side, with only two exceptions. It is also the first pattern to include a jumping move, a high section backfist landing in X stance. The movements for the pattern, and its diagram, may be found at http://www.itf-information.com/sub0405.htm.
