You think you know someone, until you don't.

Maggie said this a lot, talking to her friends in high school,
usually when talking about a boy.

Still, her friend Janice, who said she wanted to join the Army,
signed up and served five years, mostly stateside,
then moved to San Diego with some guy she met there.

Also, Carol, who always talked about France,
flew there after college,
learned the language and never moved home.

So, she probably thought, well
you never know.

You think you know someone, until you don't.

After Maggie's boyfriend of three years shot her,
several of her friends said just that, whispered to themselves,
during the funeral.
