You like me, you really like me!

After winning an Academy Award for the 1984 movie Places in the Heart, Sally Field made an exuberant and often mocked acceptance speech which ended with the line, "I can't deny the fact that you like me! You really really like me!"

The corniness of it made it an immediate catch phrase in the months and years that followed. During the 2000 Ocscars, Charles Schwab debuted a commercial featuring Sally muttering her famous line to her broker.

Contrary to the the popular myth, Sally Field never actually said these words as they are commonly remembered. Her acceptance speech for her second oscar concluded: "The first time, I didn't feel it, but this time I feel it and I can't deny the fact that you like me! Right now, you like me!"

Of her speech, Jeff Bridges, who starred with Field in Stay Hungry and Kiss Me Goodbye, said: "It was just so soul baring. It's the core of the whole thing! So vulnerable and courageous. She's willing to express the truth of her feelings and share herself unabashedly. We got a huge jolt out of it that night."
