In the early 1920's in the city of York, Pennsylvania a small confectionary company called the York Cone Co. bagan producing ice cream cones and waffles. Shortly the company began producing candy items, and thus the York Peppermint Pattie was born. Twenty years later, the Peppermint Patty became their flagship product, and the company abandoned all of their other products to produce the Peppermint Patty in order to meet the ever-growing demand.

Even with an advertising budget of zero, the candy was a hit. It found markets in the North-East US, Ohio, Florida, and Indiana. In 1972, The Peter Paul Company bought out York Cone Co. and began selling the pattie as their own product. Three years later, the product was released nationally with an ad campaign that still exists today, in which a person bites into the pattie and describes to us what an orgasm experience they're having.

In 1978, Peter Paul was acquired by Cadbury/Schweppes. Ten years later, Cadbury/Schweppes was bought out by Hershey Foods, which is located near the birthplace of the pattie in Hershey, PA.
