The incarnation of the
Devil in
Mikhail Bulgakov's
The Master and Margarita.
He spends the bulk of the novel toying with the inhabitants of Moscow, accompanied by the talkative black cat, Behemoth and impish Koroviev. An interesting interpretation of the Adversary, Woland is ominous without ever coming across as particularly evil.
In some circles, he has developed an unfair reputation for being mischeivous. This is based mostly on the antics of his compatriots -- as in the chapters "Koroviev's Antics" and "The Last Adventures of Koroviev and Behemoth."
