A novel by Octavia Butler. Doro is an eerie immortal spirit who lives by jumping from host body to host body as each one dies. He finds certain kinds of kills, killing people with unusual abilities, more satisfying, and has been breeding miserable freakish people for millenia, partly to satisfy his hunger, partly in hopes of producing someone to be a companion, an equal. One day in Africa in the 1600s, his sense for his people leads him in a new direction, where he finds Anyanwu, a natural shape-shifter whose ability has evolved independently of his breeding settlements - wild seed. The book details Anyanwu's conflicting love for her children - whom Doro threatens to control Anyanwu - and her fierce independance and distaste for Doro's killings.
