Do you lie half awake, watching me?
Do you slide off the mattress quietly,
getting ready to work without disturbing me?

I wonder if you think about me as you drive to work,
as you drink your second cup of coffee,
when you wait for the elevator.

When I wake I won't be thinking of any of this
I will simply roll over and embrace your pillow,
fragrant and soft-a reminder of what was,
a preview of what will be.
