Walter Camp (1859-1925) was a football player, coach and innovator who almost single-handedly created American football as we know it today. As Alexander Cartwright did for baseball, Camp did for his sport, creating many of the central rules in the game including the scrimmage line, the center snap, 11 players on a side, the scoring system of touchdowns and field goals, and the system of 4 downs. Camp began his football career as a player and coach at Yale and later coached for Stanford. Camp also began the practice of selecting All-American teams, and helped found the NCAA to regulate college sports.
