1878-1968 American writer of historical fiction and social reformer

He did a lot of writing for newspapers. He joined the Socialist party in 1924.

His first novel, The Jungle 1906, shocked the world with its exposure of conditions in the meat-packing industry in Chicago. It led to passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. It also had the result of converting a lot of people into Vegetarians.

He continued to publish muckraking probes of the capitalist world and for many years was prominent in California politics. Over 80 books that exposed alleged evils in such institutions as organized religion, the education, the press, The Captains of Industry, Ludlow Massacre, etc.

He ran for Governor of the state of California and came very close to winning. A very aggressive smear campaign on the part of the Los Angeles times helped to defeat him.
