A favorite zine of librarians, run for many years by Marvin Scilken. Known for its determinedly simple graphic design (is it retro if it never became modern?), the "how I run my library good" rag has been the Everything of libraries.

(It's also one of my steadiest outlets for selling crossword puzzles -- custom-made with library-related themes, of course).

U*L is now run by Mitch Freedman, the American Library Association President for 2002-2003. It's no longer typed by hand on an old typewriter, and cut and paste are just keystrokes these days, but its design remains simple.

Unfortunately for U*N*A*B*A*S*H*E*D Librarian, it appears they let their website expire. The link in Sylvar's node now goes to a Chinese page that has outdated information about "sites that allow to invest". Hooray for cyber squatting!

The new website is located at http://unabashedlibrarian.info

It's still the same place, and Mitch Freedman continues to run the zine. Paula S. Freedman is now the managing editor. Subscriptions run $71.50US yearly for four issues, although there is another page that mentions $57.50 -- looks like one they forgot to update. Yes, that seems like a crazy amount but remember this is a specialist professional publication. Each issue has how-to's, recommendations for librarians, educational information, and event ideas. They do not pay contributors.

They have now trademarked U*L and U*N*A*B*A*S*H*E*D Librarian, plus have service marked the "how I run my library good" motto. Neither are registered trademarks (yet). They began publishing this venerable newsletter in 1971.
