A metaphor for relationships developed by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. It was used in the song Wish You Were Here. In a rare demonstration of affection between divorcees, Gilmour wrote the song for his ex-wife. The phrase expresses some of the helplessness felt in the face of the overwhelming entity that is the world, and the uncertainty of life. A heartfelt classic from a master.
