Turkic does not mean Turkish, pace Webster 1913. Turkic is these days the name for the language family formerly known as Turco-Tatar or Turanian, and which includes not only Turkish and Tatar but many other Central Asian languages, such as Uzbek, Kyrgyz, Yakut, Uyghur, Azeri, Kazakh, Turkmen, Chuvash, Qaraqalpaq, and Bashkir.

They are characteristically agglutinative and have vowel harmony.

It is widely though not universally believed to be part of a larger family called Altaic, together with Mongolian and Manchu.
