If you think Latin is a dead language, you may need to reconsider. It is still in active use within ecclesiastical circles. Those fluent in Latin have no problem expressing modern ideas, even English (and other) idioms, in Latin.

Some years ago I studied Franciscan spirituality at St. Bonaventure University. A professor of church history told us what happened back when he had submitted his graduation thesis to his own professor.

The thesis came back with a number of notes scribbled on the margins. All in Latin.

He read some of them to us in class. They were all very witty, but one in particular stuck in my mind to this day:

Tu dicis, puer!

That is Latin for the English idiom that's what you say, kiddo!

What more proof do we need that Latin is a living language? :)
