Greek city on the Saronic Gulf, where the great hero Theseus was raised by his mother. Theseus' father, King Aegeus of Athens, placed a sword and a pair of sandals behind a large rock in Troezen. He then told Theseus' mother that Theseus could come forward and claim him place as heir to the throne when he was able to move aside the stone and claim the items behind it.
