Trap: The Release, The Capture

I reach to open the trap, hands shaking with pain for her, and with fear for me. I know her teeth are sharp, and I know she has no reason to be kind to me.

I grasp the platform gently, and she shrieks.

I burst into noisy tears.

I open the trap with a sudden twist, and there she is, lying on the carpet, panting. She lies still for a moment, then begins, heartwrenchingly to drag herself across the floor on two partially working legs.

I try to pick her up, but she's determined to escape, although harmed as she is there is no escape possible.

She slithers through my fingers for an endless seeming time, and then I have her, inside a soft rag...
