The fifth month of the
Aztec Xiuhpohualli (calendar) was
Toxcatl. It is was considered a month of renewal. In comparison to the western calendar, the month covered the dates we know as May 4 through May 23.
This month was known as "The Dry Time" or "The Dryness" and the chief gods honored and worshipped during this time were Tezcatlipoca, Huitzilopochtli, Mixcoatl, and Camaxtli. During this time the priests would enter the peoples homes with incense and bless them. Children would receive ritual cuts to their bodies. This was also the time for praying for rain. Huitzilopochtli was honored by the shaping and decorating of dough.
As this was a time for renewal as well, worthy warriors went in search of wives. There was a special sacrifice to Tezcatlipoca of a young man. He would be granted four "wives", who were given the names of the goddess Xochiquetzatl, Xilonen, Atlatonan, and Vixtocioatl. These wives spent the five days before the victims death treating him as a god. No doubt fulfilling all his dreams of paradise.
