Season 1888/89

This season saw big changes for Tottenham Hotspur. Since they played on common land they couldn't charge people for watching game, or in fact, have any more right to play there than anyone else who happened to turn up. This was rectified in 1888, when they rented a pitch just off Northumber Park for the sum of £17 per annum. The first match played there was a reserve match against Stratford St John's in early September 1888. The takings were a heady 17 shillings (85 pence). The season proved to be a great success for the club and they made a profit of £6.
