A book review:

Tongue Tie - From Confusion to Clarity: A Guide to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Ankyloglossia (1998) by Carmen Fernando LCST MSPAA

This book covers the history of published references to tongue tie, starting in the 1600s to contemporary references, explains the confusion and controversy surrounding the subject of existence, incidence, clinical importance and treatment of the condition. The author is a speech pathologist and uses case histories to illustrate variations in treatment and their outcomes.

This book is appropriate for speech pathologists as well as any health care provider entrusted with the care of infants and children. Although not written for lactation consultants and not covering infancy per se, the book is nevertheless valuable for LCs in illustrating long term outcomes of uncorrected ankyloglossia. Tongue-tie has a marked negative effect on the ability of the infant to latch onto and to extract milk from the breast.
