A tombolo forms when an island slows ocean waves that are heading toward mainland, causing the waves to drop sediment between the two land masses. Waves and water currents built the tomobolo in Morro Bay, California, near San Luis Obispo. Tombolos can also be found in Costa Rica's Manuel Antonio and Marino Ballena national parks.
