As revealed in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", Tom Marvolo Riddle (Lord Voldemort) was named for his Muggle father. Tom Riddle Sr. abandoned his wife and his unborn son when he found out that his wife was a witch, and returned to the house of his parents in Little Hangleton.

Tom Riddle, while at Hogwarts in the Slytherin House, took on a new name, known only to his close friends. By rearranging the letters of his name, 'Tom Marvolo Riddle', he came up with, "I am Lord Voldemort". Lord Voldemort, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, became the most feared Dark Wizard in all of England.

Harry encounters Tom Riddle in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", when he finds a magical diary into which Tom has put his 15-year-old self. Ginny Weasly has fallen under the spell of Tom Riddle and the diary, and was responsible for the mysterious acts that occur throughout the story.
