Tyr tür
Ancient Germanic god. Originally a highly revered sky god, he was later
worshiped as a god of war and athletic events. He was identified with the Roman war god Mars, and among Germanic peoples Mars' day became Tiw's day (Tuesday).
Our good man,
Cletus the Foetus, has informed me that
philologists now link Tiw to both
Zeus and
Jupiter - all of their names being derived from the
proto-Indo-European '
dyeu' ("shining one") - along the same linguistic lines as '
deus' and '
diva'.
Cletus goes on to tell me that 'Tiw' was originally 'Tiwaz' (again, compare to Zeus and Deus) and the z later turned into an r ... and so we have our Tyr (or Tür).
