Tierra del Fuego means 'Land of Fire'. It was named by the sailors of the Strait of Magellan expedition in 1521 when they saw the fires of the indigenous tribes burning on the lands beside them at night. These tribes went on to be a nuisance to Joshua Slocum, who dealt with them by putting sharp metal tacks on the deck of his boat, Spray so he would hear their yelps if they tried to board her while he was sleeping! Not exactly PC...
