The most common place where thread count is tracked is in bedsheets. Ordinary sheets tend to fall in the 160-180 thread count range. "Nice" sheets fall from 200 to 250. The highest count that is easy to find runs up to about 330 thread count (Macy's carries these). You can special order up to 600 count sheets.

Having owned many of these (160/180/200/220/280/300/600), I'd recommend buying something between 280 and 350 - for the money, it's the best deal. Good 300+ count sheet sets might cost $200; Getting up to 600 count costs about $600 and takes eight weeks for delivery. 600 count sheets are very nice, but for most people, the luxury isn't worth the expense.
