Democratic Senator from Delaware
Senator Thomas Carper is a former governor from Delaware. He was elected Delaware’s Governor by landslide margins in 1992 and 1996. Before being elected governor he served five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was in the navy, and spent five years as a Naval flight officer. At age 29 he was elected to three consecutive terms as State Treasurer. Governor Carper is also a former member of the nation's nine-member Amtrak Board of Directors. He currently serves as board vice-chairman of Jobs for America's Graduates and immediate past chairman of the National Governors' Association Center for Best Practices. Right before being elected to the senate, (starting July 1998) Carper served as the Chair of the National Governor’s Association. He was sworn in to his first term on January 3, 2001
Born in Beckley, West Virginia on January 23, 1947, Tom Carper grew up in Danville, Virginia. He attended Ohio State University, graduating in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics. After serving in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, Carper moved to Delaware in 1973, where he earned an MBA at the University of Delaware.
He is married to Martha Ann Stacy. They live in Wilmington, Delaware with their two sons Ben and Christopher who are 11 and 13 years old.
